Slumdog thrash...

Saji...
Think it is time to respond to PP's thoughts on Slumdog.... Absolutely agree with you on the point that there is nothing "Oscar Worthy" in that movie... Infact, last two days, I watched all the Oscar nominated movies and I thought there were others that deserved the trophy than this one...for example, Reader and ofcourse Curious Case of Benjamin Button... BUT, I do not agree with the view that there are a lot of regional movies that deserve Oscar...there is a separate category itself for regional movies and there is no way a Bharathan / Adoor movie would ever get into that...simply 'coz of the point you had...marketing... Why did Slumdog do well...ofcourse yes...absolutely fantastic marketing. Remember the fact that recession has hit the whole spectrum of life in US...including the entertainment industry...facts like Harrison Ford taking less than 25% of his ususal fee are testimonials for this... So, what wold one do to make money out of movies made in any other part of the world? Package well and sell to the second fastest growing economy in the world...India...The producers and marketing brains behind Slumdog did exatly that and they did a marvellous job at that. There is nothing wrong in it... Another fact is that the 6000 strong american motion pitcures academy members who decide on Oscars were paid well and taken care of by the Slumdog brains...and it is a known fact that who ever can influence that group will win the Oscars... It is also a known fact that corruption is legal in that society, provided you show the source of money you are using to "influence" people for your sake...and hence, again...Slumdogs will keep winning..:) What I can not understand is why our media is making such a big "dog" out of all this...no one cried out so loud when Gandhi swept Oscars, when all those costume designers from India won Oscars...and yeah...if I am right even our Manoj Syamalan won for his original script...and why is this sound engineer from Kerala treated as the first mallu to win an Oscar when Manoj already won...he is also a mallu..!!! Thats all for now...and by the way...those who have not yet seen "Naan Kadavul"...please see that movie...that one rocks...:)

I cannot believe it won anything at all??? it was an average movie.. but since it won at some film festival, all the 'critics' have to say its great.. if not they are disagreeing with other 'critics'.. and critics don't do that.. because if 'critics' had a mind of their own, they would NOT be the losers that they are spending their lives writing opinions about other people's work.
as for the media, the US media loves to make a big deal out of something different JUST to show how 'forward and liberal' they are.. the same way they all call Obama's children 'the most beautiful children'?? the undertone is that the kids are black and they are not supposed to be beautiful.. but they are not as ugly as the other black kids.. so we'll call them 'the most beautiful kids we have ever seen'!!!
same thing with slumdog.. it's different.. and so if you don't embrace it.. you are either 'prejudiced' or 'don't have good taste' and no one in the media wants to be seen as either...
either way.. I can't believe I wasted this many keystrokes talking about this shit.. It's just another shining example of our collective intelligence.
benjamin button should have been the hands down winner for best picture.. what a movie!!

With good marketing strategies “Avalude Ravukal’ would have won Oscar for Best costumeBest female debut artistBest sound mixingAnd for not editing
Satyait Ray has received Academy Honorary Award (A special Award for the contribution to the World Cinema, in 1992). This award has been given to the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Robert Redford, Warner Bros, Deborrah Kerr among others; so i guess that makes it really special for us as Indians…Bhanu Athaiya shared an Oscar with John Mollo for the movie "Gandhi" (1982) in Costume Design category. She won it, whereas Ray was awarded. But A R Rahman has become the first Indian composer to scoop 2 Oscars for his music in "Slumdog Millionaire". He got his first Oscar for Best Original Score and second for Best Original Song , so we have some reasons to celebrate as Indians, but I don’t understand why the media is creating such a hype…..watch Aaj Tak ….special edition on Oscars..it will be really funny..

Hari...how could you forget the first movie of Shakeela?Best low budget, high returns movie...she could have won the best actress in a 'leading' role with her fantabulous expressions, which will beat the perfo of Kate Winslet in the movie reader....!!!
Guys...am not against what is portrayed in Slumdog...there is always what we can call as democracy is arts...so, nothing wrong in the storyline...my point is that there is nothing Oscar Worthy in Slumdog...

I think he made lot more movies with name "jai the van". I remember seeing one of his movies in chithra theatre in chalai. Front bench. I think deepu was also with me. Funniest part, guys used to come, remove their shirt and relax before movie starts. Within 5 mts they start yelling "thundu ideda". After 10 mts they used to jump on the seat. After interval when they cannot expect any more thundu, used to spit in side the theatre and go out.Whatever marketing funda you people say, there will be audience for "good" cinema. Oscar is just feather on the cap. Feather is anyway worthless.

Yester day I had a discussion about "Chala patti lakshadipathi"....my version of slumdog millionaire with some of the media people. They are going to have a function at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium on 14th of april....with Rahman as the chief guest. They say that it is a western view on India....and when we Indian see the movie we dont see much as they see....Is it true...you have to think. Whatever good is good everywhere.....uhm money money money....it is all that.....
